62nd Edinburgh International Film Festival

Film legend John Huston, director of The Maltese Falcon and Escape to Victory, once described the Edinburgh International Film Festival as “the only film festival worth a damn”. This could be because it’s the longest continually running film festival in the world, or just because of the consistently high standard of films on offer. Taking place on 18–29 June, it’s sure to attract a host of A-listers, so keep an eye out for the likes of Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller

New wave

World Junior Surfing Championship

Look out for precocious surf kids strutting their stuff on the beaches north of Biarritz this month, as the area plays host to the International Surfing Association’s Junior Championship. Check out who’ll be making waves this year, by heading to Hossegor-Capbreton- Seignosse, on France’s southwest coast on 24 May–1 June.

Sauna Open Air Metal Festival

The summer skies darken over Tampere, Finland, this month, as Scandinavia’s biggest hard rock festival rolls into town. Sauna Open Air promises three days of frenetic guitar shredding and moody head-banging. Catch headliners Scorpions and Whitesnake, on 6–8 June.

Running Late

Ever thought to document London while waiting for a short back and sides? Customers at the Cuts salon in London’s Soho have. Earlier this year, people sat in their waiting area were given disposable cameras and asked to shoot some images out in the street. This collection of quirky amateur art photography is on display around the corner at The Photographers’ Gallery (5/8 Great Newport Street) until 15 June.
