62nd Edinburgh International Film Festival
Film legend John Huston, director of The Maltese Falcon and Escape to Victory,
once described the Edinburgh International Film Festival as “the only film festival
worth a damn”. This could be because it’s the longest continually running film
festival in the world, or just because of the consistently high standard of films on
offer. Taking place on 18–29 June, it’s sure to attract a host of A-listers, so keep
an eye out for the likes of Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller

World Junior Surfing Championship
Look out for precocious surf
kids strutting their stuff on
the beaches north of Biarritz
this month, as the area plays
host to the International
Surfing Association’s Junior
Championship. Check out who’ll
be making waves this year, by
heading to Hossegor-Capbreton-
Seignosse, on France’s southwest
coast on 24 May–1 June.

Sauna Open Air Metal Festival
The summer skies darken
over Tampere, Finland, this
month, as Scandinavia’s
biggest hard rock festival
rolls into town. Sauna
Open Air promises three
days of frenetic guitar
shredding and moody
head-banging. Catch
headliners Scorpions and
Whitesnake, on 6–8 June.

Running Late
Ever thought to document London while waiting for a short
back and sides? Customers at the Cuts salon in London’s
Soho have. Earlier this year, people sat in their waiting area
were given disposable cameras and asked to shoot some
images out in the street. This collection of quirky amateur
art photography is on display around the corner
at The Photographers’ Gallery (5/8 Great
Newport Street) until 15 June.
