ICE CREAM

1 GREAT BRITISH
Criterion Ices Cinnamon and Honey

What: a dairy, lactose, gluten and cholesterol-free scoop.
Verdict: though they deserve top marks for dietary rigour, the raspberry tasted more like bubble gum than bona fide berries.
Did you know? a Swedish university professor recently compared the repetitive jingles of ice cream vans with modern torture methods.

2 SWEDE KILLER
Swedish Glace Juicy Raspberry

What: a dairy, lactose, gluten and cholesterol-free scoop.
Verdict: though they deserve top marks for dietary rigour, the raspberry tasted more like bubble gum than bona fide berries.
Did you know? a Swedish university professor recently compared the repetitive jingles of ice cream vans with modern torture methods.

3 SCOTS’ SCOOP
Mackie’s of Scotland’s Organic Dairy Ice Cream

What: a premium, locally sourced scoop produced near Inverurie.
Verdict: Mackie’s ice cream is unflavoured – there isn’t even a hint of vanilla. While you can taste the quality, it’s hard not to hanker after a bit of tang.
Did you know? all Mackie’s ice cream is made on a single farm in Aberdeenshire.

4 GRANDE GELATO
Marine Ices Tiramisu

What: a frozen version of the much-loved Italian dessert.
Verdict: though you’d find it hard to eat a scoop of this before midday, the pudding-like taste is complemented by a smooth, yet firm, texture.
Did you know? Marine Ices was founded in 1931 by Gaetano Mansi, an Italian from Ravello, southern Italy.

5 SWISS PLEASE
Mövenpick White Peach and Redcurrant

What: a ripple-striped mix of summer fruits and soft, white ice cream from the Swiss dairy giant.
Verdict: while the ice cream base was great, Mövenpick gets extra marks for its tantalising blend of fruits-of-the-forest flavours.
Did you know? Mövenpick’s premium range is now available in the UK.
