Local club promoter Helen Francis blew €100 in Ireland’s capital. Here’s what she bought…
Dublin is a city of clubs and DJs, and there’s no better place to go for your vinyl than Big Brother Records (4 Crow St). Located in the heart of Temple Bar, it stocks the finest independent music on its racks, at the most competitive prices. This box holds 25 seven-inch records. €25
2 DARK ROOM NOTES 7 INCHA great single from up-and-coming Dublin electronica band, Dark Room Notes. €5
3 SASSY SUE’S GO GO INEVITABLESassy Sue’s is easily the best Friday night in Dublin. It’s for people who know their music, love their clothes and love to dance. Held every Friday in the Sugar Club (8 Lower Leeson St), it features Dandelion, Dublin’s First Lady of Go Go, on the decks. Check out www.therescuesquad.com for more details and special guests. ABOUT €10, DEPENDING ON SHOW.
4 ANGRY T-SHIRTBased on the core principals of “bold yet polite”, Angry Towers (41A Pleasants St) makes T-shirts, jumpers, frocks, lamps and even baby gear. Head there to browse the racks of clothes, see how designs are dreamt up and meet the Angry masters, Scott or Johnny, themselves. €30
5 MAGAZINESThe Dubliner can often take a tongue-in-cheek look at this great city, but it is really a terrific read. Great restaurant and culture guides make this a must-buy for anybody visiting the capital. State magazine is a new music and culture Bible for Dublin and Ireland. €3.50 AND €7.50. TOTAL, €11
6 TRIP TO THE SCIENCE GALLERYHosting cool shows, like exploring the world of science in fashion, the Science Gallery (www.sciencegallery.ie) is one of Dublin’s best sights. Most exhibitions are free, which is why I couldn’t resist buying this cup and pen. €7
7 A PINT OF GUINNESSDublin has, let’s face it, loads and loads of pubs. The Stag’s Head (1 Dame Court) or the Long Hall (51 South Great George’s St) would be my choice for a pint of Guinness. These are traditional boozers with a great atmosphere, and no loud music or bad decor to interfere with your drinking pleasure. €5
8 COFFEE AT THE BALD BARISTAThis coffee shop (68 Aungier Street) serves up the best cup in Ireland. The Bald Barista himself, Buzz, can be found behind the counter, and he was even kind enough to donate a pouch of his fine-tasting Fixx coffee. TWO LATTES, €7
